The Teleological Argument: The Design Argument, From Aquinas to Physics

The teleological argument is also just called the "design argument." It's one of the oldest arguments for God's existence, and one of the most misunderstood. Most people know it through William Paley's story about a watchmaker, learn that Darwin supposedly proved it wrong, and figure that's the end of the story. It isn't. Here's the real history, the real objections, and why the argument came back — in a very different form — in the 1900s.

Where It Starts: Aquinas's Fifth Way

Thomas Aquinas wrote five arguments for God's existence. The fifth one is often mixed up with Paley's argument (below), but it's actually different. Aquinas didn't argue from how complicated living things are. He argued from regularity — the fact that things in nature, over and over, act in ways that lead somewhere useful, "as the arrow is shot to its mark by the archer." His point: something without a mind can't aim itself at a goal, unless something with a mind is aiming it. Aquinas concluded that an intelligent being must be directing everything in nature toward its purpose — "and this being we call God."

The Version Everyone Knows: Paley's Watchmaker

In 1802, William Paley opened his book Natural Theology with a story that's now famous. Imagine you're walking across an empty field and you find a stone. You'd probably assume it had just always been there. But if you found a watch instead — with all its little parts working together for a purpose (telling time) — you'd immediately assume someone made it. Even if you'd never seen a watch built and had no idea how, you'd still know: something made this on purpose. Paley then argued that nature is full of the same kind of evidence. He pointed to the eye: it shows the same signs of careful design as a telescope. If a telescope needs a designer, he argued, so does an eye.

The Objections — Hume, and the Darwin Nuance

David Hume wrote a generation before Paley, in a book called Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion (published after his death, in 1779). He pushed back on this style of argument before Paley even made it: maybe the universe is too different from a human-made object for the comparison to work. Maybe chance, or some natural process we don't understand yet, explains things just as well. And even if the argument does work, Hume pointed out, it would only prove some designer existed — not necessarily one, perfect, infinite God. It could just as easily point to several flawed designers.

Charles Darwin's theory of evolution (1859) is usually treated as the final knockout blow to this argument — and for Paley's specific version, that's largely fair. Evolution gives a real, well-tested explanation for how something as complex as an eye can develop gradually, with no designer needed. That directly undercuts Paley's "an eye is too complex to happen by chance" reasoning. But here's the nuance: evolution does not explain why the underlying laws and numbers of physics — the stage evolution plays out on — are set the way they are. That's a separate question, one level deeper, and it's exactly the gap that the modern fine-tuning argument steps into.

The Revival: Fine-Tuning as a New Teleological Argument

In the late 1900s, philosopher Robin Collins and others rebuilt the design argument — this time, around physics numbers instead of living things. That matters, because this version isn't vulnerable to the Darwin objection above. Evolution already assumes chemistry, stars, and a stable universe exist; it has nothing to say about why the cosmological constant, or the strength of gravity, or the carbon resonance are set the way they are. By moving the argument to physics, Collins and others built a version that engages directly with today's cosmology, instead of 1800s biology.

Where This Fits

Philosophers of religion put the teleological argument in a category called "natural theology" — arguments for God built from reason and observation of the natural world, rather than from religious revelation or scripture. It's different from the cosmological argument, which argues from the simple fact that the universe exists at all rather than never having existed. Teleological arguments specifically point to evidence of purpose, order, or design.
